Hi friends! Dr. Matthew Toone and Dr. Jordan Brady here! We’d like to talk to you all about something we’re sure you’ve heard your mother or grandmother get after you for. I’m sure you’ve all heard them say “Stand up straight! Fix your posture!” Well, we want to talk about why they’re absolutely correct! A very common reason to have neck pain is associated with poor posture. Muscle knots, trigger points, joint dysfunction, back pain, headaches, etc. can all result from poor posture.
What can cause me to have poor posture?
- Spending a lot of time at a computer
- Looking down at your phone
- Having an injury (car accident, fall, collision in contact sports, etc)
- Having a preexisting condition (stroke, spinal cord injury, scoliosis, osteoporosis)
What problems can come from poor posture?
- Upper crossed syndrome
- Shortened and tight neck muscles and pectoral muscles
- Stretched and weak neck flexor muscles and rhomboids
- Muscle dysfunction leading to:
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
- Back pain
As you can see, there is a lot that can become problematic if you don’t listen to your mom! If any of this feels familiar, you’re in luck. Treating pain that is caused by poor posture is pretty simple. As physical therapists, we can evaluate you specifically and identify what is causing your postural pain! We will get a detailed history and take a look at your strength, posture, and range of motion. This will allow us to create a personalized plan to get you back on your feet in no time! Treatment plans typically involve strengthening the weak muscles, improving your range of motion, and adjusting your ergonomics, body mechanics, and environment to make sure you’re not putting yourself in a dangerous position.
